Our mission is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by driving individual behaviour
change through increased awareness of the climate impact of our everyday choices. Derived from the most
current peer-reviewed science, GHGI makes it simple for consumers to understand
the
impact of what they eat.
The index itself is an open-source
database of food's ingredient-level
climate impact, including a natural language processor to extract
ingredient names and amounts from recipes. It provides two pieces of information for any given recipe or
ingredient: total CO2 equivalent GHG impact, and an A-through-D grade as to how GHG
efficient it is as a food source. The CO2 component is an objective and relatively
straightforward calculation. The grading is heuristic, and we expect to revise
it on an
ongoing basis in consultation with independent experts.
The index is freely available on GitHub, and we welcome pull
requests.
To make this information readily available to consumers at the point of decision making,
we are actively pursuing partnerships with recipe web sites, restaurants, diet tracking apps, food
delivery services, and grocers.
GHGI is a not for profit endeavour founded in 2020 in Vancouver, Canada. If you
would like to get involved — whether by working with us, partnering, or providing financial support —
please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
